I got no life leh. How?

Two days ago, this was the exact question a friend posed to me. She was asking me what I usually did, because one of her guy friends had accused her of "not having a life." Her rationale was that guys always had activities lined up, hence they were in a position to accuse her of not having a life.

So her question to me was, "What do you do in your free time?"

I told her I played the piano, surfed the net and shopped. Her next question was "Do you shop with people or alone?"

"I shop alone. Is it even possible to shop with people?"

"Is there anything you do that involves other people?"

Shit. What was the last thing that I met up with people for? Project meetings don't count.

She got me there. I actually had to think. I told her yes, but not often. Sometimes I watch movies, or meet others for meals.

After a short discussion, we came up with a plan. The apparent plan is for us no lifers to find some random hotspot in town, study there and put "Currently in town studying" or some other silly equivalent on our facebook and msn statuses to indicate that "we have a life".

The rationale is that if you can update your facebook and msn statuses with enough things, you have a life. Even if its stuff like "currently eating my sandwich." Or "Weili thinks that the coffee at Starbucks is great" like anyone needs to know you're at Starbucks or what you think of the coffee there.

The fact that informing people about your life or lack thereof is free and extremely easy on facebook/msn has made these platforms the main source of utterly useless information you would not tell someone in real life but feel absolutely liberated to do so online. Why so, I can only wonder.

It also helps if you're in town while you're doing such things. Apparently, being in town lends an aura of "I am a happening person" when all you are most likely doing is something totally unhappening like mugging.

Ironically, for all the fretting about not having a life, I don't think anyone can answer this question for me satisfactorily.

"What exactly then does having a life constitute?"

Random thought of the day

I was looking in the mirror and thinking women have it better than men because they don't have to shave.

Then I realised that they had to shave their legs.

I'm happy to be a man.

Come on internships. Bring out the worst in people around me.

It's that time of the year again, when professional internships are around the corner and everyone is gunning for the best jobs. The competition is keen, as usual. The showcase has come, and everyone wants a role on the stage.

What has astonished me though is the sheer naivete of people applying for internships. Instead of being confident in their own ability, they choose to measure themselves against the abilities of others, and damage their own chances based on what they perceive other people to be. They try to ward off competition by asking people to not apply for companies they are interested in, in the hope that this will better their "chances".

The people who get cushy jobs are not the ones who fear competition. They are the ones who relish it because competition forces them to demand the most out of themselves. If you are afraid of competing with your peers, you don't stand a chance in the industry out there because the sky is that high and you've only seen a small part of it, namely the small world of CS which you might arrogantly think breeds the next generation of talent for the media industry. You couldn't be more wrong, because talent can be bred anywhere.

I find it even more amazing that some people think that they deserve certain jobs. Just because there are more places than applicants and an internship is assured does not mean that companies are obliged to hire you if you do not convince them you are worth hiring. I've found myself answering the same questions a countless number of times, about how to answer interview questions and the like, and what they have to bring to interviews.

I hate to be brutally honest but it is really that simple. If you have never thought about the important questions, namely "Why are you here?", "Why would you like to work for this company and not others?", "Why should we hire you and not other people?" and most importantly of all, "What are you looking to get out of your internship?", perhaps you are not ready for internship. Perhaps you expect it to be handed to you on a silver platter like a typical Singaporean who has been spoonfed through school. If you have ever sat down and asked yourself those questions, the answers for any interview will come very naturally.

In any interview, it is highly unlikely that you will say something that someone has never said before. It is highly unlikely that any one answer you give will make the interviewer go "Wow I should hire you now because you are going to be the next CEO of my company."

Since that is the case, what are interviewers looking for in interviewees? The same thing they look for in any job applicant, whether an intern, or a graduate. They are looking for initiative, drive, the ability to think critically, out of the box, and most of all, the willingness to work hard, and trust me, these things can be discerned from interviews.

Telling me that interviews are a poor judge of one's character couldn't be more wrong. If you couldn't even be bothered to put in the effort to prepare for an interview, what assurance do I have that you will put in effort for an actual job?

I wouldn't even say interviewers are looking for the ability to do the basic scope of your job well because that is a given. If you're an advertising creative, you should be able to design campaigns, so mentioning how good you are at that is pretty moot because everyone else can do that too. If you are going into PR, you are naturally expected to be good with people.

If you are going into journalism, and I will be most critical about this particular group because I am one of those people too, if you have to ask me about what to say in an interview, I will tell you to go work in another industry because it is obvious you lack critical thinking skills, initiative and drive, 3 things which all journalists need. I do not believe in mincing words to people who desperately need a wake up call because massaging egos is not in my vocabulary.

Thoroughout my internship application experience people have been telling me "Oh you're so lucky you don't have to fight for places with other people because you already have SPH." Honestly, if I had the chance to apply for these other companies too, I would, and trust me I would give you a hell of a competition because I actually enjoy telling these companies precisely why I think they should hire me, something which I find amazing that most people aren't even thinking about.

This post will not make for easy reading, especially for the guilty, but I would be hard pressed to admit I've said anything wrong here.

Benches.

I'm sitting here with 10 minutes left to French lesson, and I realise that everything in life is but temporary.

I used to spend minutes, hours and days just reading about the lives of other people. Fantastic lives, eventful and impactful journeys, defined by the moments that make life living. And I would look back at my own life, so utterly devoid of excitement, filled with the drudgery of schoolwork, the banality of taking the bus from school and home, and other mundane things.

I would sit and wonder why I didn't have the life I wanted to lead. Then I realise that everyone has their own life to lead, and every journey is important because of the landmarks along the way. If I were to spend my life looking over my shoulder, I would never realise what I had in front of me, until it had passed me by.

And one day when I sit around wondering what had been, I would realise that I had a whale of a time, only that when I did, I never realised it, never treasured it, and never took the experience by my own two hands and lived in it.

I might not enjoy school, but the experiences I've had as a result of studying here, some of them are wonderfully unique. In strange ways, I find myself looking back upon them and smiling. It's not always a bed of roses in a garden scented with lavender, but a life based on a singular cachet of certifiably great ways to live would quickly lose all semblance of meaning, meaning that comes with having lived through a variety of experiences, both the extraordinary and seemingly mundane.

We go through lows so we appreciate the highs more. Okay, I'm ready for another difficult French lesson.

Some "news" stories

From AsiaOne

Strange woman with cane strikes women in shorts at Ang Mo Kio market

by Beh Yuan Hui

NO short pants on the streets!

A sexagenarian has been heading to the streets and caning women who wear short pants.

The woman has been seen loitering at the market and hawker centre near some flats in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore.

Holding a rotan in her hands, the woman would cane any female in short pants that she came across.

The republic's Lianhe Wanbao reported that the sexagenarian would also scold the women as she caned them.

"Why are you wearing shorts? You must be caned for wearing this," she said in Hokkien.

On Thursday, the woman has raised her rotan on a hawker.

The hawker, who was annoyed by the old woman's act, had attempted to stop her but was still whipped.

Her mother saw this and went to her aid. The mother and daughter managed to stop the old woman and forced her onto the ground.

They called the police later.

Whoa that's some dangerous old lady on a mission of vigilante justice. Remember, no shorts in Ang Mo Kio! You might kenna rotan.

From The Temasek Review

Straits Times named Ris Low's photo as "sg-stupid.jpg"

The digital edition of the Straits Times has labelled one of the photos of ex-Miss Singapore World 2009 Miss Ris Low as “sg-stupid.jpg”!

The Straits Times has been conducting a media witch-hunt on Ris Low and the organizer of the pageant ERM World since SPH journalists dug out her past conviction last Friday.

To ensure that Straits Times does not try to wriggle its way out by changing the name of the photo later, we have taken a snapshot here:

What exactly does Straits Times mean by “sg-stupid”? Is it casting aspersions on the intelligence of Miss Ris Low by labelling her photo as such?

It is utterly despicable, disgusting and disgraceful for a supposedly professional national English Daily like the Straits Times to give such a derogatory name to the photo of a person.

Though Miss Low may not be blessed with impeccable command of the English language and she had a history of a psychiatric disorder, it doesn’t mean that she is less intelligent than the average Singaporean.

Even if it is really so, the media has no right to shame her in front of the public. The journalist responsible for naming and uploading the photo should issue a public apology to Miss Low and the public.

Miss Low should consult her lawyers to see if there are any legal grounds for suing the Straits Times for libel. She is still young and has a long way to go in her life.

The Singapore media should let her off and stop harrassing her like some public enemy when there are more pressing issues like hand to deal with.

Unlike some public officials, Ris Low did not cause the deaths of any person nor did she lose billions of taxpayers’ monies. When asked about her past conviction, she was perfectly open and candid about it. She also expressed her remorse over her mistakes and seek forgiveness from Singaporeans.

Did any of our millionaire ministers apologize for their mistakes? Instead of chasing after the people of real importance, the Singapore media found fit to bully a defenceless young girl whose only mistake is to sign up for Miss Singapore World without revealing her past convictions to the organizers.

Obviously this "news" article is bullshit but I just found it hilarious ST forgot to caption the photo properly and put it on their website. Ris Low actually has grounds to sue for libel and win.

Sunderland VS Liverpool - A Balloon Scores.

This is a sorry time to be a Liverpool fan. It's a even sorrier time to be the Liverpool fan who sank his own team with a beach ball that is official Liverpool merchandise. I bet he got a hiding from his dad.

Otherwise, it's just ridiculously hilarious.

If you want that beach ball, its currently out of stock in the Liverpool stadium shop. They might never restock it.

What I really feel like telling my tutors sometimes.

Has anyone ever told you that you assign too much work? No? Can I do the honours?

As the years wear on, I find that I enjoy school less and less. But don't worry, this is not going to be your typical long whiny post about how school sucks. There are a million blogposts out there being written by schoolkids about how school sucks, and seriously, the world needs another of those like how much they need another long whiny article from Sumiko Tan in the Sunday Times.

To Miss Tan: Honestly, make up your mind. If you want to get married, do it. If you don't want to, then stop whining about it. I'm still trying to figure out if your column is supposed to be filed under "humour" or "advertorials", but you aren't very funny and advertising certainly isn't working in your case.

The thing about my tutors is, when they assign work, its always with the implicit assumption that their work is the only thing we have to do over the weekend. However, when work is assigned, it is added to the end of the list of things I already have to do, namely watching videos, surfing forums, chatting online, going out etc. As you can see, I'm really busy. I don't even have enough time to read the newspaper, because people only read that when they have nothing better to do.

Somewhere at the end of that list, work comes in. But even before I start on work, I have to do a series of warm up exercises. I need to stretch the 5 fingers on my left hand, twirl the pinky on my right, touch my big toes together, and start chanting out multiplication tables to the tune of Boyzone's "You needed me". No, I'm really bullshitting.

It's really amazing how everyone is talking about Stephen Gately now like someone important just died, because before he did, all I knew about Boyzone was Ronan Keating. I really wonder what he would have to say about that, but like the song goes, its a case of "you say it best, when you say nothing at all" If he had something to say at this point, I daresay it'd be even bigger news. Until Ris Low opens her mouth again that is.

Anyway, there's a bug that has been skittering around my table and I'm still deliberating if I should squash it with a tube of rolled up paper but the only paper in sight is my SPH contract. I could do it as a creative statement to protest against my plight of being squeezed by SPH to accept their lousy offer but I don't think HR would take kindly to that, because they aren't big on ironies, and honestly, the bug could be bigger.

It shouldn't be too small, otherwise it would escape the attention of their myopic staff, which would defeat the point of me making a creative statement.

I'm really whining about school here. Any references to SPH and its products are purely coincidental.

Woman calls cops over stolen marijuana plants

Taken of metro.co.uk
In a further example of how some people haven't grasped what it is exactly that the police do, a woman called the cops to report the fact that her marijuana plants had been stolen.

According to police the 54-year-old woman from Brant Township in Michigan called authorities after two men broke into her home, and demanded her crop of marijuana.

According to Detective Sgt. Randy F. Pfau, the woman claimed the two men fled after taking the plants.

Officers responding to her call promptly arrested her on charges of manufacturing and delivering marijuana. She claimed the crop was for personal use, but did not have a medical marijuana card required under Michigan's recently-passed laws on personal use of the drug.

Pfau said that this is the first case he can remember where someone complained to police about their drugs being stolen. 'They're just not reporting this,' he told the Saginaw News. 'She was pretty upset.'

The woman is likely to face charges, depending on tests to verify if the plants were in fact marijuana. Authorities are still hunting the two men who stole the plants.

Some people are so stupid that you wouldn't be wrong they say they are talented at it. I mean, this is so stupid even stupid people would find it hard to top it.

Why are the queues in Canteen B always so long.

Canteen B used to be a no man's land, a place the starving went to when they couldn't afford the time to eat proper meals. It was helped by the fact that the food really sucked, and the only schools it served were NBS, CS and EEE.

Now, there's a problem. The food in Canteen B has actually improved, and two more schools have sprouted up in the vicinity, SPMS and HSS, which means the queues at lunchtime are so long they stretch all the way beyond the area designated for queues and into the spaces between tables, and on some extreme occasion to the steps leading down to another section of Can B.

On many occasions I have cut queues because I did not realise that there was another half of the queue snaking away at the tables, so I just joined in at the end of the queue in the queuing area, gathering quite a few dirty looks in the process. However, CS people are known for their thick skin, and if you ever catch me doing that, I'm just putting my skills into practice.

I want to ask NTU one question. Since the North Spine is exactly the same size as the South Spine, and the South Spine has grown considerably in population with the addition of two new faculties, why is Canteen B still so damn small? It's an old complaint, but I'd like to point out to NTU that engineers are not the only people who need to be fed.

The thing Can B really needs is fast food, because the queues mean that we spend more time queuing than actually eating, and we are being forced to pay extra for takeaways because there simply isn't space to eat in the canteen. So NTU conceeds. They give us some "fast-food". You know what they give us? Mr Bean and Each-a-cup. The engineers get Subway, Old Chang Kee, pizza and sushi and we get pancakes and bubble tea.

I don't see the logic here. For 3 bucks in Can A, I get a full meal. In Can B, I'm unable to queue for the stalls, so I have to settle for two pancakes and a cup of soya bean milk for the same price. I'm really sick of eating overpriced pancakes where I actually have to search for the fillings, and I can remember the taste of the soya milk before I drink it.

However you know what's more amazing? The more amazing fact is, despite the super long queues at just about every other stall driven out of desperation, people still avoid the Beijing Fengwei stall. People would rather go hungry than eat there. I think the stallowners of that stall should seriously start considering an alternative career.

The world is still full of stupid.

I was in the dance studio area of the Esplanade library doing some work when I had to take a call. Obviously, when you take a call in the library, you can't help but talk, unless you want to be a really good citizen and keep the peace by walking like 50 metres out of the library just to take the call, but most calls don't stay ringing that long.

So I took the call. After about 2 minutes into the call, I saw a member of the library staff dressed in orange frantically gesturing at me to keep my volume down. I wasn't speaking very loudly, but I ended my call anyway.

Later, the librarian, who was a kindly old lady, explained to me that someone had threatened to complain unless I had shut the hell up. She even apologised, which I felt was really unnecessary on her part because it wasn't her fault.

I was wondering who this son of a bitch was because obviously if he or she had a problem, the wrong solution would be to complain to the library staff because you only do that if you are incapable of solving the problem yourself. If the offending party was a rowdy couple making out, then yeah by all means complain to the library staff. But a single student having a conversation on a handphone? Instead of solving the problem, this person created a new problem.

It's like trying to buy a meal at a hawker centre and you realise the hawker has no change for your 50 dollar note. Instead of going to the neighbouring hawker to ask if they have change, you fire off a letter to CASE to complain because hawkers don't carry enough change for transactions. It's this kind of what the fuck logic of Singaporeans that really gets me sometimes. You think the government is God so you don't need to use your own hands ah. If your dog shits on the floor you call NEA to come clean it right?

If the person had asked me amicably to keep my volume down, I would have lowered my volume no problem. But really, all this offended person had to do was move out of earshot, a distance of maybe 5 metres because I'm not exactly a loudhailer, but no, he or she had to complain. I know I shouldn't be making noise in a library but do you expect me to mime while taking a phone call?

I don't see why I should do keep quiet just because some random idiot wants to complain. Here's my logic. If you can use your voice to complain, why can't I use my voice to take a phone call. What makes you think that by complaining you're not causing any less of a disruption to library patrons?

I seriously can't stand such people. They give me the impression they have nothing better to do, hence they go around and screw with the lives of others. I believe they do so because they are so desperately unhappy with their own lives that they have to seek fulfillment from spreading misery.

Maybe when they were kids they didn't get any serious loving. Maybe they are suffering from the aftermath that results from the deprivation of sweets, candyfloss, bright shiny objects, or sparkly pink things. Really, I don't want to know.
