Imagine this. You are a bored cubicle dweller. You've spent the last half an hour refreshing your email inbox, but nothing is coming in. Which is good news. There isn't anything in particular to do either. Which is also good news. Then you spot that packet of prawn keropok sitting on your colleague's desk. It begins calling out to you. You can smell it. You can see the mist of keropok bits as you snap it into two, with that satisfying "krak" sound.
Next thing you know, there is a plastic keropok-less packet on your table. Soon to join it are a packet of muruku that a colleague made herself for Deepavali, and some chocolate bar wrappers from several dark chocolate and raisin bars that another colleague bought from her Euro trip.
You eat because you're bored. Then lunch comes by and you eat again. Someone should do a study on workplace snacking. They will find that there's a strong correlation between boredom and overeating.
But it gets worse when you're stuck in office working overtime. You have to call in deliveries, and guess what's always the first option on the menu. McDelivery! To be honest I hate eating McDonalds these days but there really is little else at the hours I work. Or you could skip dinner altogether but doing so renders me comatose and unable to function after like 9pm.
One good thing does come out of doing nothing in office though. You get the time to surf the net nonstop, and you uncover musical gems, like the three I'm about to feature here.
The first features Clara C, a Los Angeles based singer-songwriter. A friend just notified me that she's about to be in Singapore on Nov 28 at the Esplanade recital studio, so if you're a fan of open-mike sessions and intimate acoustic sets, this could be for you. She'll be performing all her best songs, so if you're a fan you have to catch this.
The second is Neverending Summer by Dayplayer. I got this song off a criminal forensic drama that I watch called Bones. Don't watch that really unless you can stomach death in all its forms. Even now I still get disgusted looks from people who steal glances at my phone while I'm watching it on the MRT. It brings a chuckle when I realise the number of breakfast appetites I must have ruined every morning on the way to work.
The last is Shake It Out by Florence and the Machine. I can't believe how long it took me to discover this crimson-haired siren, but now that I have I can't stop listening to her stuff. Guess I have a weakness for musical red-haired girls. And no you do not want to know how many such girls I have on my playlist. If I'm bored enough I may feature more of them.
