Being on the verge of leaving for greener pastures, both figuratively and literally, I have suddenly become very aware of exchange rates. I have been following the exchange rate for the pound like a hawk for about 3 months now, and I wish it would drop more but now I'm resigned to the fact that when I go there, I will feel extremely poor.
I am going to try and subsist on bread and random critters I find in my room like furry rodents. When its properly cooked, it should probably taste like Chicken McNuggets. The real problem here, since I'm ethnically Chinese, is really about how well I can cook it. Being Chinese entitles you to eating all sorts of garbage and not eliciting any raised eyebrows until you die from it.
Anyway, being in such a sorry plight really makes you empathize with people from countries with weaker currencies. And of course, when I'm talking about such countries, I have to look over my shoulder at the country all Singaporeans love to hate.
EH! I FINALLY UNDERSTAND HOW ALL YOU MALAYSIANS FEEL WHEN I COME TO JB AND GO CHEEP! CHEEP!
Sorry, I just had to do that. It is really what happens when you train for 2 years to attack a country that looks strangely like Malaysia but is always called Blueland, Yellowland or Goldland in the maps. Large oil palm and rubber plantations notwithstanding.
I still have a problem though with the general cleanliness of the place. I thought Singapore was bad until I went to KL recently and till now I'm still convinced that I should not have worn my nice shoes there. And when some liquid drops on your head, you can be very sure its most certainly not just water. Be happy if it doesn't stink.
And another thing. Do not put your hands under the tables for any reason when you're in any eating establishment. The last thing you want to see on your fingers before you tuck into roti prata is chewing gum that is 3 months old.
Thank you old man Lee for banning chewing gum. I don't know if you were the one who did it but everything in Singapore is credited to the old man by default. I can live without eating chewing gum if it means nobody decides that all surfaces should be adorned with it.
The one thing they do make better in Malaysia though is Indian curry. The curry there actually tastes Indian. You won't know what I mean until you taste it for yourself. The Singapore version is really just watered down because spices in Singapore are expensive. Just ask McDonalds man. They won't even supply you with packets of chilli sauce unless you ask for it. Then they give it grudgingly. Like seriously what the hell you stupid multinational profiteering franchising dingdong piece of junk food shit that I can't not eat.
Anyway, I've got a piece of advice for Malaysians. Don't go to UK. And I have a second piece of advice for them after that one. Blame Mahathir.

That grey murkiness called the future.
I find myself thinking about this a lot. That grey murky thing called the future. The same thing I cannot see, but I cannot not mull over.
And many times I ask myself if it would be a gift or a curse to be able to see the future. I am a typical Singaporean in one sense. If I could see the future, the first thing I would buy is a copy of Lianhe Wanbao for the 4D numbers.
The next thing I would do is see what I would be like in the future. But the same question pops up every time. What if I don't like what I see? It would be scary because that's the deal with such things. Whatever you see, it becomes your destiny. The more you try to escape it, the more you end up moving towards it. At least that's what I learn from the movies.
Which always leads me to ask myself another question, if I had this particular power, would I be using it, or would it be using me? I am pretty sure many things would change, but at the end of it, I will be poorer for it. I know who would be richer for me having this power though. The person who buys me out of the rights to tell my own story, then makes it into a bestselling film.
I know, I ask myself a lot of questions. It is what happens when you have to take long bus and MRT rides everyday and you're sick of the songs in your mp3 player. But I cannot help thinking about it, what I would do if I had this power. Then I realise that my desire for power, it really stems from a need to have money.
No matter what power I have, I would use it to earn money. Even if that power was something stupid like being able to detect whether an egg is boiled inside its shell, I would demonstrate it on some talent show and earn money with it. Not to mention eat perfect hard-boiled eggs, every time.
I hope that when I look into the future, I see myself happy. Of course it would be nice if I were super rich and all I had to worry about was finding happiness, like in those shows where there are super rich old men who are desperately unhappy. Money can't give you everything, but without money, you can't do shit.
But above all, happiness matters most. Because being unhappy makes you more prone to heart disease, hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and assorted STDs.
