I went to a ukulele open mic session called Uke Got Talent where some of my friends were performing today, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was organised by these guys as seen above, and held at the 15 minute cafe at the Lasalle College of the Arts.
There were good performances, some not so good, but I was amazed at the ingenuity of the players, who managed to improvise their own covers of songs and rock them out. I was particularly impressed by one group that did a ukulele rock cover of "Papa Don't Preach", which was cool as hell not least because it had a ukulele bass. Like who even knew that there was a bass version of the ukulele. They got the whole cafe clapping together to their song, no easy feat considering that the patrons were spread over two levels. But the nature of good performers is, they draw you in, and before you know it you're part of the performance.
I totally regret not bringing my camera, and I want an ukulele for Christmas.
