some truths about jaded cynical people

Some people think that because I'm jaded and cynical that I do not know what happiness means. They could not be more wrong. For one, I am a big fan and practitioner of schadenfreude, or deriving happiness from the misfortune of others. For the moralists who would chastise me for doing so, I like to also ask them one question.

Are you a fan of jokes? Do you know that the premise of almost all jokes is to laugh at other people, to revel in their misfortune and stupidity? Hah. Hypocrite.

But in between moments where I revel in simply being, for lack of a better description, a "肛门" (a nickname that a friend gave me that literally translates from Chinese as "ass hole"), I also find that happiness is very much a personal responsibility. No one can make you happy, and similarly no one can make you unhappy, if you don't want them to.

Granted, often enough our problems seem huge, but over the years I've learnt that sometimes it is the way you look at things. And the most important thing I've learnt is that no matter how bad everything seems to be, you must never stop doing the basic things right.

The basic things are
1) Eat properly, aka don't skip meals don't overeat don't eat at weird hours don't eat junk
2) Sleep at least 7 hours a night
3) Exercise

I find that no matter how shit life is, I never feel worse after a good meal, a good sleep, or a good exercise session. You can't control your social life sometimes, because people can be busy, or they have just decided that they have more important things than you, but that is never an excuse to give up on yourself, because you have to keep yourself strong for the ones that do matter, and you have to look after yourself because no one is responsible for your well being. And you will often find that the friends that do matter, they will show you why they do in the long run.

If you think all this is weird coming from me, you can rest assured that the next time you slip and fall in the streets, I will still be the first one to laugh at you. Some things, they never change.
