Soccer's Born Loser

Off the Post

Here's a gif showing one of the most memorable moments of that Chelsea Barcelona match, the sight of an enraged Ballack chasing down the Norwegian ref Tom Henning Ovrebo. It has been the subject of much ridicule online, with some people going one step further to create their own gifs, like these.

And this one is a real kick in the balls, especially if you know Ballack's personal history in soccer.

Tom: No I'm not giving you that trophy Ballack. Try harder next time. =p

On the international stage, Ballack is one of those people you would term an eternal bridesmaid or born loser, always second best or falling short at the final hurdle, destined never to claim the top prize. Here's a list of his "almost-there" international accomplishments.

1) UEFA Champions League 2001-2002: Runner-up (Bayer Leverkusen), lost to Real Madrid
2) FIFA World Cup 2002: Runner-up (Germany), lost to Brazil
3) FIFA Confederations Cup 2005: 3rd, Losing semi-finalist (Germany), lost to Brazil
4) FIFA World Cup 2006: 3rd, Losing semi-finalist (Germany), lost to Italy
5) UEFA Champions League 2006-2007: Losing semi-finalist (Chelsea), lost to Liverpool
6) Euro 2008: Runner-up (Germany), lost to Spain
7) UEFA Champions League 2007-2008: Runner-up (Chelsea), lost to Manchester United
8) UEFA Champions League 2008-2009: Losing semi-finalist (Chelsea), lost to Barcelona

Eight attempts and no trophies to show for it. How much pain can a man take. It sucks to be you Ballack. Maybe you should stop wearing the no. 13 shirt.
